I have been a professional firefighter for 17 years. Since I graduated from the academy, I have gained weight. I still exercised in the past, but it was really limited to cardio for about 20 minutes, and some free weights here and there. … I was at work one day and we were in a training session with full gear. I noticed that I could not keep up with the younger guys anymore. They really left me in the dust. It was then I knew that I had to do something about my stamina. As I was reading one of our trade magazines, I noticed it had an article about CrossFit. I decided to try it, and I am so glad I did.
I have amazed myself with the gains I have had made in strength, endurance, and stamina.
I met with my trainers and went through the fundamentals course. There were a couple of times they thought I was not going to make it out of the box because I was breathing so hard. I stuck with it, and since January, 2010, through diet and CrossFit, I have lost 35lbs. I have amazed myself with the gains I have had made in strength, endurance, and stamina.
CrossFit really is fun and I feel guilty when I miss a workout (which never happened before, in my previous work out regimens). I also sleep better, feel less stressed and now can keep up with the younger guys at work. CrossFit has made a big impact on my life and I understand now that exercise is a big part of living a healthy life. I have also made new friends at the facility, and they keep me motivated in and out of the box. I really look forward to going and enjoy the workouts. They are high intensity but short duration and it is never the same thing day after day. I encourage everyone to give it a try.
