What kinds of activities do you enjoy when you’re outside the gym? Cooking, spending time with my partner Zahra (who also does CrossFit with me), exploring the Rochester area and expanding my business

Favorite CrossFit Movement/WOD: Bear Complex, because it combines a lot of different movements and you feel like a badass when you get through it.

Least Favorite Movement/WOD: Toes to Bar (for me it’s “Knees to Bellybutton”)

Goals: To reach my target weight of 160, to do an unassisted pull-up, and to properly do a regular push-up

Best CrossFit Accomplishment (So far): I have lost 40 pounds this year between CrossFit, running and the Paleo diet.

What was your first experience like at CrossFit 585? Adam and Eric took us through the CrossFit 101 classes, they made us feel that we could achieve the success we were looking for and that we didn’t totally suck. Adam went beyond the workouts to help me to refine my diet and meet my goals. The trainers didn’t make my age, weight and limitations due to past injuries an issue. I remember being extremely sore for the first few months. I’m still sore regularly, but not as much.

What do you love most about being a part of our community? The fact that it is actually a community and you are supported by its members. This community goes beyond the 585 gym, it includes the other gyms in the region and extends nationally. We have friends in California who also live the CrossFit lifestyle. People in CrossFit watch out for each other and cheer each other on in the WODs. They challenge you to do your best and get better. They also speak in their own special language that outsiders don’t understand.

Any advice to the newest members of our community? Just get started. Get into the gym and do the workout, don’t think too much about it. It will be challenging, but you will get through it and you will feel better about yourself. Make sure you set some goals to give yourself focus; all the trainers will help you.
